The Iress story

Iress began as a tech start-up in 1993, with a handful of Australians, working in a small office in Melbourne, developing specialised financial trading software. A quarter of a century on, Iress is a leading global player, designing, developing and delivering cutting-edge tech solutions for clients operating in financial markets, wealth management, superannuation and the mortgage sector.

Iress listed on the ASX in 2000 and now has offices in Australia, Canada, -, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK. Iress has consistently enjoyed strong growth, has doubled in size in the last five years and in 2016 had operating revenues of $390 million.

The culture

Iress recognises and rewards hard work and celebrates success over a Friday afternoon drink and at various social events throughout the year. As well as local charity events and initiatives, they hold global days and activities to make the most of their global strength and diversity. Everyone comes together to support the community with various events taking place to raise funds for the Iress Foundation supporting local charities.

Iress also has a focus on innovation and this comes out at their yearly global hackathon which is an intense 24 hours of collaboration and turning ideas into reality. The hackathon is all about their pursuit of finding a better way of doing things. The 2017 Global hackathon saw 6 countries come together, with 161 teams generating 330 awesome ideas whilst consuming 300 pizzas.

Social contribution

Iress hold fundraising activities and pursue corporate social responsibility initiatives relevant to their local communities. Some of the charities Iress has supported around the world are: A Start in Life; Singapore Children’s Society; Blessings in a Backpack; Myton Hospice; TABLE; Whitelion; James Hopkins Trust and Seeds of Africa. Earlier this year Iress launched the Iress Foundation to provide structured support to these CSR activities, formalise arrangements with chosen ‘opportunity initiatives’ and institute a dollar-for-dollar matching of team fundraising activities driven by its people.

The recruitment process

Iress seeks out graduates who can contribute to “the creation of world-leading financial services technology and client projects”.

To be eligible, you’ll need to be in the final year of your bachelor degree or have recently completed it. It doesn’t matter what your degree is in as long as you can demonstrate “the necessary programming skills and systems knowledge” (for example knowledge of any of the following, Python, C++, HTML5, Java, CSS3, JavaScript and React across web, desktop, mobile and smart technologies).

You’ll need to have the drive to make things happen, be a creative problem solver, strong communicator and effective collaborator.

After applying for one of the graduate roles you will be asked to take an assessment relevant to the role you have applied for.  This gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your skills and behaviour and gives you the opportunity to meet the people you would be working with.

If you’re looking for a grad position as a Software Developer, UX designer, Business Analyst, Actuarial Analyst, Systems or Test Engineer you should keep an eye on Iress’s job board. If there are no relevant grad positions on there, you can send the Talent team your CV so they can contact you if a suitable role comes up.

Iress’s graduate scheme is a structured development program that focuses on technical and professional training. It allows grads to learn the business inside-out. As a grad, you’ll be working alongside a team of experts and receive on-the-job coaching and feedback.

Remuneration

Iress doesn’t make information about salaries publicly available. But reports suggest they are competitive and the usual corporate perks are offered – lots of free food, Friday afternoon drinks and chips, subsidised health insurance. Iress recently introduced new parental leave benefits which are among the best in the industry.

Career prospects

Iress encourages its people to keep learning and grads work on real projects from the start. Nonetheless, if you’re a strong performer you can expect to progress reasonably quickly; in fact, Iress’ current CEO Andrew Walsh, was one of the original developers of XPLAN, one of Iress’ flagship products).

The vibe of the place

If you’ve got the necessary skills and drive, you should find working at Iress challenging, rewarding and enjoyable. The workplace culture is supportive and collaborative. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to develop innovative fintech that helps millions of people by making it more straightforward to do anything from getting a mortgage approved, to trading on the stock exchange, to planning for retirement.
